Ever looked a Dragon in the Eye? How amazing and majestic are these critters of our great southern reef and found no where else in the world. Delicate as much as they are majestic. Admire them but protect them. We are very lucky to live live in a place where we can witness their beauty, and whilst I frequently witness them while guiding tours it’s nice to finally get the camera out and connect with them through the lens. Weedy Sea Dragons of Portsea
The second day of my 3 day stint in Mornington was almost washed out with rain, but that wasn’t going to stop me driving to the site and inspecting the site. The rain had eased a little and with no wind the water was flat as a tack and you could see the bottom from the pier. Already wet from the rain it was time do don the wetsuit, get out the macro lens and see what I could get! Lots of throwaways, but a couple of good ones. More weedies to come

Fiddler Ray resting in the seabed at Rye under the the cover of darkness, approaching slowly bit by bit firing off shots here and there, this ray didn't seem too bothered by my presence and allowed me to get the wide angle lens close up to with in an inch or 2.

Blackthroat Threefin (Helcogramma decurrens)

With Boxing Day a blowout on the Fleurieu Peninsula I headed over to the wind protected Edithburgh on the Yorke Peninsula to get some diving in. The first star of the upcoming Edithburgh photo bomb is the Blackthroat Threefin. These little guys can literally fit on my pinky and dart all over the seabed during the day, getting the camera in the right spot at the right time without startling them to dart off was the tricky bit and who would have thought they are actually photogenic

Southern White-Spot Octopus (Callistoctopus bunurong)
When Darkness prevails over day light these Octopus come out from hiding under the sand to prowl the sea bed looking for a tasty crab or fish. Often mistaken for a Southern sand octopus due to their colour, shape and the way they burrow into the sand like the sand octopus. Fun fact: most Animakls can't see the Colour Red, so what better than to add to the cover of darkness on the sea bed? being red.

Cute but Deadly!
This little guy is a newly hatched Southern Blue Ring, yes they are orange when they hatch. If it were to sit on my thumb nail it barely would have covered half of it, thats how small they are. Blue Rings live on average for only 8 months, they hatch grow up, mate and perish shortly after.

Tasseled Angler Fish (Rhycherus filamentosus).
The inconspicuous conspicuous , extremely well camouflaged against rock and weed, if it wasn't for the fact that rocks don't have eyes and a mouth then thats all I would have thought this was but fortunate for me the weed covered rock had a mouth and an eye staring at me and although I started to get exited I did have to stare it down for half a minute to register it wasn't just my eyes playing tricks on me.
I've been hanging for a long time to see one of these guys and this week end I was lucky to not 1 but 2 of them over a couple of nights.

Getting all Jiggy in your PJ's!
Night Diving in Edithburgh, South Australia is a Pyjama fest atm, spotting 6-10 per dive and some in close proximity to each other. I was lucky enough to spot this little raunchy pair getting their jiggy on to make little future PJ's and nothing was stopping them, not even a few Divers staring, shining torch lights on them and snapping photos.
